Consultant Position supporting PEFC’s expansion in Southeast Asia


Project Officer (International Consultant)

PEFC International is currently recruiting a Consultant to support PEFC’s expanding profile of work in Southeast Asia. With expertise on PEFC Certification, sustainable forest management practices and supply chain management, the Consultant will provide training and expertise to an expanding portfolio of projects and partners. The Consultant will be based in Southeast Asia and work throughout the region, but in close co-operation with the PEFC International Office based in Geneva, Switzerland.

Specifically, the Consultant will contribute to the following PEFC projects:

  • Asia Promotions Initiative: works to raise awareness, build capacity and encourage the uptake of PEFC certification throughout Asia. Already, PEFC Asia Promotion offices exist in Beijing and Tokyo, and PEFC National members are located in China, Malaysia and Indonesia. The Consultant will increase PEFC’s presence and availability throughout Southeast Asia and support the ongoing implementation of the Asia Promotion regional work plan in collaboration with PEFC International, members and partners.
  • Expanding Group Certification Globally: looks to facilitate the exchange of experience, promote international cooperation and develop innovative certification solutions which make PEFC certification more accessible to small landholders in developing countries. Current pilot projects are ongoing Malaysia, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam and there is potential to expand in new locations. While projects are implemented by local organizations, international partners and/or PEFC members, the Consultant will contribute to the project’s management and offer technical input and expertise to the projects & partners, based on PEFC requirements. As innovation and cooperation are fundamental aspects of expanding forest certification into new areas, the Consultant will support PEFC’s active contribution during project implementation.

More broadly throughout the region, the Consultant will support PEFC’s expanding profile and stakeholder network by strengthening partnerships, relationships with key private sector associations and organizations, and delivering training and capacity building support.

Qualifications & Competencies:

  • University degree(s) in Forestry, Environmental Science or related studies (advanced degree preferred);
  • A proven track record in supporting efforts in the Asia region to achieve sustainable forest management, related processing and trade;
  • Extensive knowledge of forest certification system requirements, especially PEFC;
  • Experience implementing or auditing Chain of Custody certification a strong advantage;
  • Flexible, pro-active and dynamic. Able to work autonomously but in close connection with PEFC International. Fluent in English.
  • Experience and competencies related to working with small landholders, providing training, undertaking project management and supporting ongoing fundraising efforts;
  • Comfortable organizing & running seminars and public speaking;


PEFC International is offering a 6 month, short-term contract. Potential for a contract extension may exist but is dependent upon performance and funding availability. The ideal time commitment is estimated at 12 days/ month, but the specific terms can be agreed with the ideal candidate. The Consultant must be based in the Southeast Asia region (although specific location is flexible), and willing to travel frequently throughout the region.
