Panel of Experts
In October 2006 the Board of the PEFC Council resolved to make the existing optional "Panel of Experts peer review of the assessment report" (Annex 7, chapter 6.2.2) mandatory for all assessments and reassessments of certification schemes with immediate effect.
In selecting the Panel the Board resolved that it will be the case that the composition of the Panel should represent a broad range of interests including:
- Forestry
- Certification and accreditation processes
- NGOs (including social and environmental interests)
- Market access
Following detailed initial testing of the new arrangements, the Board decided at its meeting in October 2007 that appropriate changes were needed to ensure greater transparency in reporting of the Panel members' individual views and the Consultant's considered responses. In addition the Board decided that to meet the imperative need to ensure timely input of results to the PEFC Council Board, it would be necessary to both expand the numbers of panellists undertaking the work and to improve the operational systems. New interim principles have been developed to ensure complete transparency in the reporting of each individual panel member's view and of the consultant's response. The Board has further undertaken that the role of the Panel of Experts be included in the ongoing major governance review of the PEFC Council.
Below are the names and short resumes of current Panel of Experts members and more will be added in due course.
If you feel you have the experience (or know of someone else who does), please send or ask them to send, their resume to the PEFC Council (tech@pefc.org) for consideration by the PEFC Council Executive Committee for inclusion in the Panel of Experts, stating which one of the four categories above they wish to be considered for.
PEFC periodically provides training for panellists and a modest honorarium is paid on the assumption of one day required per scheme.
