The PEFC Council requested Indufor Oy to carry out a compatibility assessment of the scope and level of requirements of the principles, criteria, and indicators of African Timber Organization (ATO/ITTO PCI) with Pan European Operational Level Guidelines (PEOLG). The objective was to establish the level of equivalence among these two reference basis for the assessment of the national forest certification standards of tropical African countries.
The assessment produced a qualitative one-way evaluation on the compatibility of ATO/ITTO PCI with PEOLG. PEOLG was used as the reference document. The evaluation focused on the scope and performance level of ATO/ITTO PCI and compared them to the respective elements of PEOLG.
The assessment concludes that the ATO/ITTO PCI provides a feasible reference base for the assessment of the national certification standards for African tropical natural forests against the requirements of the PEFC Council.
