Comparison of ITTO guidelines with PEOLG

The Savcor Indufor Oy study evaluates the compatibility of ITTO guidelines with the PEOLG (Pan European Operational Level Guidelines) and analyzes the possibility of ITTO guidelines' use for the purposes of PEFC endorsement of forest certification systems from tropical countries. The following guidelines were taken into consideration in the assessment:

(i) ITTO guidelines on the sustainable management of natural tropical forests (1992)
(ii) ITTO guidelines on the conservation of biological diversity in tropical production forests (1993)
(iii) ITTO guideline for the establishment and sustainable management of planted tropical forests (1993)

The assessment concludes that the ITTO guidelines provide a feasible reference base for the assessment of the national certification standards for tropical forests against the requirements of the PEFC Council.
