| PEFC Council: The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) has just been accepted as an association member of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF). Through its membership the PEFC Council is now part of, and will work constructively with other, IAF members such as official national accreditation bodies, certification bodies and standard setting bodies, to assure businesses and their customers, that accredited certification bodies are competent to carry out the work they undertake.

| PEFC Germany: Federal Minister of Consumer Protection, Renate K?nast, pleads for the invention of a new label "Free of genetic engineering", reports the daily newspaper "Die Welt" on January 24th 2004 on the occasion of the presentation of the german bill with the result that the European Guidelines on the release of genetically modified organisms shall be implemented. A label already exists for our forests, that guarantees safety regarding genetically modified organisms: the PEFC certificate.

| PEFC Council: PEFC (the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) is pleased to announce the start of the public consultation period for the assessment of CertforChile, the Chilean national forest certification scheme. ?This is the first non-European scheme to be assessed? said Ben Gunneberg, Secretary General of PEFC, which has to date successfully assessed and endorsed 13 independent national forest certification schemes covering some 52 million hectares of certified forests, delivering millions of tonnes of certified wood based products from sustainably managed forests to the market place.
