Cameroon joins PEFC


PEFC Council:  The Cameroonian Association of the Pan African Forestry Certification (PAFC Cameroon) was unanimously accepted as the new member of the PEFC Council for Cameroon. Cameroon is the second member country from Africa after Gabon and its membership raises the number of PEFC member countries to 33.

PEFC's vision for tomorrow: A world in which people manage forests sustainably


PEFC Council:  The PEFC Council, the world's largest forestry certification organisation, launched its new strategy at its 11th General Assembly in Munich, Germany on 5th October 2007. The strategy is designed to deliver PEFC's mission, namely to give society confidence that people manage forests sustainably. In addition the strategy concentrates on growing the market for certified products; providing economic benefits for the sustainable forest management (SFM) community and promoting rural development.

Comments welcome : Danish certification system up for public consultation


PEFC Council:  The Danish system has been thoroughly revised over a one-year period in the light of latest scientific research and practical experience from the field. It has now been presented to the PEFC Council for international recognition and is undergoing a public consultation until 20 October 2007.

Public consultation prior to decision on PEFC Belgium re-endorsement


PEFC Council:  "Everyone can have their say on the revised Belgian forest certification system before PEFC decides whether or not to grant it PEFC re-endorsement", said Mr Ben Gunneberg, Secretary General of the PEFC Council. "Interested organisations and individuals can review the system's requirements at www.pefc.org and send comments directly to the external assessor by 4 October 2007."

Slovenia achieves PEFC endorsement


PEFC Council:  Nearly three years since the establishment of the Institute for Forest Certification in Slovenia, and following a thorough standards development process, detailed consultations with stakeholder groups of society and an independent assessment, the Slovenian Forest Certification System SFCS has now achieved PEFC endorsement.

PEFC seeks public's view on Swiss Q-label certification system


PEFC Council:  The PEFC Council's international consultation on the Swiss Q-label forest certification system started today. All interested organisations and individuals are invited to send comments on the system to FORM International, who are assessing the Swiss system against the PEFC benchmark requirements, by 2 September 2007. The consultation and assessment are part of the extensive 5-year revision and continuous improvement process, which is undertaken for all PEFC endorsed certification systems.

PEFC holds public consultation on American Tree Farm System


PEFC Council:  One of the world's oldest initiatives for certifying sustainable forestry, the American Tree Farm System ATFS, is undergoing its assessment for international PEFC endorsement. ITS Global has been appointed by the PEFC Council as the independent assssor to assess the system against the PEFC benchmark requirements. Part of the assessment is a 60-day public consultation period for all interested stakeholders and the general public.

PEFC expands global reach to China


PEFC Council:  PEFC has opened its new PEFC China Office in Beijing. The new office will provide market support and information on PEFC certification for Chinese government and industry decision-makers interested in promoting sustainable forest management. The PEFC China program builds on an existing presence in Japan, and extends PEFC's reach into Asian markets.

PEFC certified wood recommended by German Timber Procurement Policy


PEFC Council:  The German Government announced that it will exclusively buy timber and timber products from proven legal and sustainable forest management. PEFC certification will be used as a means of providing such proof. Federal Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel said: "The Federal Government wants to set a clear example against over-exploitation and illegal logging with its new public procurement regulation. In order to contain the ongoing destruction and degradation of forests globally, sustainable forest management is indispensable."

Revised UK Woodland Assurance Standard going for PEFC endorsement


PEFC Council:  The PEFC UK certification system, of which the UK Woodland Assurance Standard is part, has been submitted to the PEFC Council for re-endorsement. Its full documentation is available at the PEFC Council website www.pefc.org for public consultation and all interested individuals and stakeholder groups are invited to comment on the system by 20 March 2007.
