The Value of PEFC’s Endorsement Process Focus of Panel of Expert Meeting

Mar 20 2013

poePEFC's methodology of assessing compliance of national forest certification systems with international requirements are best practice in the certification world, yet there is nevertheless room for further improvement, a recent Panel of Expert meeting concluded.

The Panel of Expert plays an important role in the endorsement of national forest certification systems. After independent assessors verify the compliance of national systems with PEFC's globally recognized Sustainability Benchmarks, the Panel of Expert reviews the assessment reports to ensure consistency, quality and robustness. Assessment reports are only evaluated by the Board of Directors and considered by the General Assembly if they have been thoroughly reviewed by the Panel of Experts.

Participants of the Panel of Expert meeting agreed to standardize the reporting format to improve to the overall readability and clarity of their reports. As the Panel of Expert reports form part of the publicly available national systems documentation, this will further contribute to the transparency of the PEFC system and enable readers to better understand the evaluation of the Panel of Experts.

The Panel of Expert meeting, which took place on 19 February 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland, also included a training session to update members about the newly adopted procedures for the process of the endorsement and mutual recognition of national forest certification systems and provided space for exchange of experiences and knowledge among each other and with PEFC International.

The current Panel of Experts members are:

  • Stefan Czamutzian, Austria
  • Mark Edwards, Australia
  • Kent Gustafsson, Sweden
  • Hugh Miller, United Kingdom
  • Hans Köpp, Germany
  • Hannu Valtanen, Finland
