A new timber office has been turning heads in Europe’s sustainable construction sector. The Hasslacher Group’s new headquarters in Preding, Austria, is a three-storey, 2,221m² workplace, has achieved PEFC project certification.

Designed by Trecolore Architects and built using PEFC-certified timber, it was delivered at remarkable speed with the entire project taking eight months, while the timber structure itself completed in just six weeks, thanks to extensive BIM-enabled planning and streamlined factory-based, industrial prefabrication.

Constructed by Luggin-Ziviltechnikergesellschaft m.b.H, the office showcases an elegant, modern architecture defined by interlocking volumes, cantilevers and generous areas of exposed wood. The use of visible timber – both glulam and cross-laminated timber (CLT) – creates a warm and calming interior environment.

In total, the project used 232m³ of PEFC-certified glulam and 655m³ of PEFC-certified CLT, supplied by Hasslacher and comprising of spruce, birch and larch. Sustainability was baked in from the beginning and guided the project from start to finish. No PVC or halogen-containing materials were used, and the green roof was designed to limit solar gain and support the bee-friendly planting around the site.

Energy efficiency and renewable energy also play a central role. A photovoltaic system powers charging stations for e-bikes and electric cars, while controlled ventilation with heat recovery and a heat pump system help maintain a low-carbon indoor climate. Expansive glass façades maximise natural daylight, and sheltered loggias and terraces provide both shade and protection for the timber structure.

The project’s forward-thinking design earned recognition at the Timber Construction Prize Styria 2025, underscoring the influence of timber innovation in Austrian building culture.

Commenting on the win, CEO and owner of the Hasslacher Group, Christoph Kulterer said:

>“With this project we wanted to show what was possible with wood and our own timber construction products, from planning to industrial prefabrication to assembly. The building embodies our DNA – innovation, sustainability, and craftsmanship at its best.”

Hasslacher is Austria’s largest producer of mass engineered timber.

PEFC Project Certification

PEFC Project Chain of Custody certification is a type of Chain of Custody certification that allows you to benefit from PEFC certification for your construction projects.

When a ‘Project Manager’ obtains a Chain of Custody certificate for project certification, contractors working on this project are covered as Project Members and aren’t required to obtain Chain of Custody certification themselves. The Project Manager will have to comply with the relevant requirements and establish a suitable management system.
