7 – 11 September will see the global forestry community, PEFC among them, gather together to discuss the key issues facing our forests and to share ways of addressing them.

Forests are essential to life on our planet, to mitigating and adapting to climate change, ensuring adequate supply of fresh water, enhancing biodiversity and providing sustainable incomes and livelihoods, including food security. But they face unprecedented and unrelenting pressures.

7 – 11 September will see the global forestry community, PEFC among them, gather together to discuss these very issues and to share ways of addressing them, at occasion of the 14th World Forestry Congress, hosted by the Republic of South Africa.

Several members of the PEFC International team will be travelling down to Durban, South Africa, to take part in a range of panel discussions and side events.

On the Thursday, PEFC International CEO Ben Gunneberg will be part of the panel during the ‘Innovation and Investment Forum’ as well as in the sub-theme dialogue on ‘Encouraging product innovation and sustainable trade’.  Sarah Price, Head of Projects and Development at PEFC International, will also be part of the sub-theme dialogue ‘Forests for socio-economic development and food security’.

Experts and the audience will explore together the opportunities and challenges in securing adequate labor standards and the ways forward to improve workers’ rights in forest management

Invest In Us - Forest Smallholders, Community Forest Members and Indigenous Peoples in Asia

Supporting an innovative way for calls to action directly from rights holders themselves to raise awareness/change attitudes among forest investor WFC participants to prioritize investing in community forestry in Asia

Unlocking the Real Value of Forests Through Strengthening Locally Controlled Forestry
12:45 - 14:15, Wednesday 9 September
Stimulating dialogue among participants on how to scale up and continue to unlock real value from forests to improve livelihoods, support rural development and ensure sustainable management of forests

Promoting Sustainably Certified NWFPs to Sustain Livelihood of Local Communities Who Depend on Forests
18:15 - 19:30, Wednesday 9 September
Introducing the management and utilization of NWFPs (non-wood forest products) in a global context, analyzing its impact on the livelihoods of local communities, demonstrating the importance and effectiveness of certification of NWFPs and discussing the importance and feasibility in developing and internationally generic standard of certification for NWFPs
