PEFC statement on the current situation in Myanmar - Update

22 February 2021 News

We previously stated PEFC is extremely concerned about the recent developments in Myanmar.

As the situation in Myanmar continues to develop, companies sourcing forest-based products from the country should be mindful of the risk that revenues could potentially be used in the financing of activities that violate human rights.

It is of utmost importance to us that certificate holders and certification bodies ensure that the safeguards of chain of custody certification remain firmly in place in these challenging times.

We therefore urge buyers to pay particular attention to this in their due diligence processes and, if in doubt, to apply the precautionary principle.

The Secretary General and the PEFC International Board continue to monitor the situation.
