The environment will be the first medal winner at the 26th Winter Universiade in Trentino, Italy this December, and following the success of the Nordic World Ski Championships earlier this year, PEFC will be at the heart of it.

"The Winter Universiade is an excellent opportunity to inform the public about the benefits of sustainable forestry and highlight the importance of forest certification,” said Pier Luigi Ferrari, President of PEFC Italy. "We therefore commend the Organizing Committee of the 26th Winter Universiade in Trentino for committing to use only PEFC certified paper during the event and for sourcing local and sustainably produced timber in their constructions.”

Beyond the organizer’s commitment to reduce the Game’s use of paper by using digital media wherever possible, the Winter Universade will utilize sustainably source material from PEFC-certified forests for the tissue paper, copy paper, brochures and posters used during the event. Furthermore, the facilities and buildings related to the Universiade will be constructed from wood originating in local forests managed according to PEFC’s globally recognized Sustainability Benchmarks.

“The Universiade’s participants will be hosted in a region that is green at heart, investing in green with sustainable buildings using local PEFC certified wood,” highlighted Mauro Gimozzi, Trentino’s provincial minister to City planning, local authorities and staff, during a press release to launch this ambitious project.

The Winter Universade’s Organizing Committee aims to cut the 20,000 tons of CO2 emissions the Games are forecasted to produce by adopting a set of good practices ranging from sustainable mobility to waste management and food and environmental guidelines (including reducing the heating systems by one degree in all public buildings during the event), in order to minimize this event’s environmental impact.

The Winter Universiade is taking place between 11 and 21 December 2013 in Trentino, Italy.
